Power-aware Wireless Sensor Network for Tracking & Monitoring

The Programme
Recent advances in wireless technology has spur the developments of wireless sensor network (WSN).  WSN has a great potential for mass deployments in health-care, home, enterprise and industrial applications.  The programme aim to address some of the challenging issues in WSN  in order to provide innovative solutions at affordable costs.

A wireless sensor constitutes of three basic components, a sensing unit, a processing unit and a radio unit. In addition, it requires a source of power for it to operate.  Sensing unit could be separate, as in RFID with temperature sensor.  Sensing could also be inherent as is the case for Radar sensing.

In a WSN, potentially a large number of sensors could be active in a small region.  This requires very efficient solutions to take care of interference, handling of large amount of sensor data and securing of the sensor information.  Mining of such huge amount of data may lead to innovative services to the business.

Some wireless sensors should be able to operate efficiently for many years.  This demand for ultra low power consumption require new means of energy harvesting for extended operation.  The programme strives to address all these issues towards providing innovative solutions for cost-effective applications.

In order to make the sensor information more useful for many applications, it is important to know the location of the sensor. The programme looks into different location estimation techniques based on RFID, Zigbee and UWB to suit the requirements of different wireless sensor applications.

Technologies such as RFID and Zigbee under this programme will also help provide new intelligence to machines to automatically communicate meaningful information in a Machine to Machine Communication environment.
