Research And Development Initiatives

As a national R&D institute under the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), I²R seeks to help local industry players build up their R&D competencies, so as to compete more effectively in the global market.

By setting up joint R&D initiatives with internationally established R&D organisations, academic institutions, government agencies and multi-national companies, our intent is to enable local players to tap on the combined expertise and facilities of I²R and our collaborating partners.

Joint Research Laboratory:

  • Image & Pervasive Access Lab (IPAL) -
A synergy between French and Singapore research scientists and students, focusing on content-based image and information retrieval for natural and medical images.
  • Singapore Advanced Imaging Laboratory for Ocular Research (SAILOR)
It is the first translational clinical research facility at Fusionopolis and is the culmination of 5 years of highly productive and close collaboration between I²R and the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).

The new SAILOR will be the focal point for cutting-edge ocular imaging research in Singapore, including the development and application of novel computer imaging technologies to measure eye diseases with an emphasis on translational clinical outcomes for the benefit of the patient. The Center will develop and test new software, read and grade ocular images, validate the utility of imaging software, and function as the first point of collaborative research in ocular imaging, and subsequently patient assessment, in terms of early prediction of debilitating eye diseases by using new ocular imaging and elucidation technology.

At the Joint Announcement of SAILOR Opening, Prof Lye Kin Mun, Deputy Executive Director (Research) of I²R (first on left) and Prof Wong Tien Yin, Director of Singapore Eye Research Institute (fourth from left) signed an agreement to formalise the setup of the joint laboratory at Fusionopolis. The signing is witnessed by Guest of Honour, Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of A*STAR (second from left) and Prof Tan Ser Kiat, Group CEO of SingHealth (third from left)
