Imagination to Reality Talks

To arouse interests of our youth in R&D as a desirable career, IČR has been actively organizing talks to the secondary/JC students. These talks are given by a few senior researchers on ‘Why research in ICM (IT, Communications, and Media) is exciting, challenging and rewarding’.  These talks provide a snippet of what a career in Research and Development is like. They also provide a glimpse of the state of the art, and a vision of future trends in their area of expertise (e.g. trends in AI, Internet, Communications, Media, etc)& D is like.

ScienceCenter“Meet the Scientist” Talks

Organized by SingaporeScienceCenter, these talks are targeted at secondary students, especially lower Secondary students, and are intended to provide personal contact with a scientist or researcher and give a peep into the exciting world of research. Of course, the public visiting the Science Centre at that time are also invited.

A*STAR MOE JC1 Attachment Programme

Held during the November/December school break each year, students are attached to a researcher in IČR for a period of four to five weeks. Under the supervision of the assigned researcher, they engage in a small project designed to illustrate some aspect of what the Institute does and gain concrete knowledge of what scientific research entails. In addition, students are given a chance to get to know a researcher firsthand (minus the stereotype of absentmindedness and Einstein-like mad hair). Most of all, it provides an opportunity for students to be inspired by science at work and not being awed by fancy machines.

Any student interested in a scientific career or who may wish to consider it as a career option should consider joining this programme. After all you might just pass a distinguished scientist in the corridor and get a first-hand opportunity to interact with him!

A*STAR MOE Local Research Attachment Programme for Science Teachers

This programme is modeled after ColumbiaUniversity's Summer Research Program. Its objectives are to expose science teachers to current cutting-edge scientific research, to give the teachers a chance to carry out some research work, and to allow them to interact with scientists. It also aims to empower teachers to communicate the research process and the applications of science to their students with confidence.

MOE Gifted Education Programme (GEP) Kool Kid

IČR provides researchers for mentoring pupils from the Gifted Education Program (GEP) (in secondary 2 or 3 for a year, from Jan to Nov, offering about 2-4 hours of contact time per month, plus longer attachments during term-breaks). This is a key out-reach program to secondary schools. The purpose is more to inspire talented kids so that they will become future research engineers in ICM (information, communication and media) technology.

Secondary Schools (Sec 3 to JC1) R&D Mentorship and Attachment

For students with passion, or "dreams" to fulfill (in the ICM area), I2R researchers are available help students chart out steps to turn their imagination into reality. Students have to create their proposed projects and brainstorm with our researchers. They meet our mentors once or twice a week and attached to I2R during their school holidays. IČR may conduct few introductory tutorials for a group of students with similar research interests. With the through-train system, a secondary 3 student could actually spend about 3 years embark on his/her research project.
