We are delighted to be back.

This issue, we focus on the theme of Healthcare, a much discussed topic, in view of the greying population. We will share with you some of I²R’s work which aims that enhancing the quality of people’s life.

The severely disabled are denied of normal life. Our Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) team builds on existing technology to develop non-invasive brain image techniques to provide an avenue for the disabled to communicate with people around them. For patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, constant monitoring of their cardiac condition could save their lives. MobiCare has been developed to capture ECG signals and transmit through mobile devices like PDA or mobile phones. Elderly are more prone to falls, if an elderly falls and no one is around to render help, the consequences could be unimaginable. I²R’s Fall Detection technology deploys a network of video cameras for continuous monitoring and alerts relevant parties through mobile phones if fall situations occur. Finally, we share our researchers’ work in Image processing algorithm which could help medical practitioners in more accurate diagnosis of glaucoma and cataract conditions. You can catch all the above in Technology@work.

I will like to take this opportunity to introduce Mr Budi Sastra, who is appointed as I²R’s new Deputy Executive Director (Industry) as of 1st March’08. Following this new appointment, I am now the Deputy Executive Director (Research) of the institute.
