July 2004 Q3 Issue

It is time again for a new issue of @work. We hope the first two issues of @work have provided you a good feel of the R&D work at I²R.

First, we are pleased to inform you that the teams representing I²R have done us proud again in the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award 2004! The teams have swept six awards in the Open Section, of which, two out of the three silver awards were clinched by our teams. No gold award was given out this year.

In this issue, Technology@work will take you through our work in a video compression technology which has been adopted as the recommended H.264 reference encoding in the MPEG/ITU-T international standard.

If you are a sports fan, read the feature on our Sports Video technology - get to know how you will never miss critical play in a sport match being broadcast over TV in future.

Finally, find out about our state-of-the-art research in Generalized Multiple Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS).

The past months of April to June have been busy. We played host to several international visitors and held a series of public lectures delivered by well-known experts from the industry. We hope you took the opportunity to join us at these talks.

We welcome your feedback and look forward to including news of collaborations with your organization in future e-newsletters. If you are interested in any of our forthcoming conferences, we encourage you to sign-up for them early.

Our website, http://www.i2r.a-star.edu.sg, is a rich repository of information and we invite you to visit it often.

Please feel free to forward this e-newsletter to your friends and colleagues.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Lawrence Wong, Professor
Executive Director
