Our Intellectual Property today; Your Business Opportunities
tomorrow
While the product life cycles (PLC) of technological products are
getting shorter these days, the need to maintain a competitive advantage
through developing innovative, marketable products continues to
be a big challenge in the business arena. To multi-national companies
that have sizeable R&D budget and manpower, they might respond
to the change more readily. To startup or small medium enterprises
(SMEs) with limited R&D time and resources, however, this might
be an overwhelming hurdle to overcome.
At
Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R), we have a pool of dedicated
researchers who are keen to put their ‘dreams’ into
real life technologies. The Institute does R&D in communications
and information technology to develop holistic technologies across
the ICT value chain.
By
licensing our technologies in the industry, I²R hopes to see that
the technologies developed by our researchers can become marketable
products that assist companies to maintain a competitive edge and
future business growth. In the long run, the companies’ growth
will help to create more job opportunities and contribute positively
to Singapore’s economy.
In
2003, I²R licensed 10 technologies in the industry. A local company
licensed the Fast Categorization Expert (TCX) from I²R. The company
hoped that the licensed technology will help them enhance their
Information System through better classification and making electronic
records ready for future use. The result was a very satisfied customer.
The I²R technology was able to provide this requirement as the electronic
records could now be classified and registered automatically.
Another
local company licensed two technologies from I²R: Text Information
Agent (TlA) and Post-search Information Refining (POST-SIR). The
company reaped the benefit of this licensed technology which helped
their customers in terms of more effective browsing, querying and
tagging of documents.
Apart
from working with local companies, I²R also licenses technologies
to MNCs when the opportunity arises. An example of MNCs licensing
technologies from I²R is two patents registered with RFID. Through
the licensing, the MNC worked with I²R and the Institute for Microelectronics
(IME) to develop a RFID chip together with tags and a reader/writer.
Since its launch, this joint initiative has boosted the company’s
standing in the RFID industry worldwide.
If you looking for a quick, efficient way to tap into established
and useful intellectual assets to add value to your products and
services, without having to pay excessive amounts for trying out
a new venture, licensing may be your answer.
