1: Iterative Receiver Design

Recent proliferation of wireless devices had considerably increased
the need for networking and provisioning intercommunication between
these devices for various applications. Broadly, the wireless networks
can be classified into two categories. The cellular networks and
wireless local area networks can be termed as infrastructure-based
wireless networks. The second category, termed as infrastructureless
wireless networks include mobile ad hoc networks and sensor networks.
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have use in battlefields, disaster
recovery areas, intercommunication between islands or in difficult
terrains, and conferencing with any infrastructure support. Sensor
networks have a wide range of applications ranging from monitoring
environments, sensitive installations, and remote data collection
and analysis. In this tutorial we will have an in-depth view of
the issues related to mobile ad hoc networks and sensor networks.
The outline of our tutorial follows.Recently, in addition to adaptive
signal processing (ASP), iterative signal processing (ISP) has been
extensively investigated as it can significantly improve the performance
of the receiver under interference-limited channel environments.
One example is the turbo equalizer that can improve the performance
significant by properly mitigating intersymbol interference (ISI).
ISP is different from ASP in some aspects. ISP is based on off-line
processing. Hence, it results in a relatively long processing delay
and large memory requirement. However, as hardware and computing
power have been significantly improved, the difficulties will not
be obstacles to ISP becoming popular.
The main idea of the proposed tutorial is to introduce
up-to-dated ISP techniques in wireless communications context. In
particular, we aim to provide ISP ideas for receiver design under
interference-limited channel environments. This tutorial would be
a blend of theory and practice and would lie at the interface between
signal processing and communications.
Note
that this tutorial will be based on the book, entitled 'Adaptive
and Iterative Signal Processing', that will be published by
Cambridge University Press (CUP) and available
by the end of 2006.

About
the Instructor
Jinho
Choi (Senior
Member of IEEE) was born in Seoul, Korea, in 1967. He received B.E.
(magna cum laude) degree in electronics engineering in 1989 from
Sogang University, Seoul, and the M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical
engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
(KAIST), Daejeon, in 1991 and 1994, respectively. He is now with
Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT), University of Wales
Swansea, Swansea, United Kingdom, as a Professor (Chair in Wireless
Communications). His research interests include wireless communications
and array/statistical signal processing. Prof. Choi received the
1999 Best Paper Award for Signal Processing from EURASIP and a Senior
Member of IEEE. Currently, he is an Editor of Journal of Communications
and Networks (JCN) and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions
on Vehicular Technology.
