Getting Around

The Singapore Public Transport system consists of Mass-Rapid-Transit trains (MRT), and two public bus companies, the Singapore Bus Services (SBS) and the Trans-Island Bus Service (TIBS). Although it is possible to pay via cash in the buses and purchase use-once tickets for the trains at the train stations, you will find it useful to purchase the EZLink Farecard. Buy an ezLink card for S$15 at a convenient time from any MRT station (including the MRT station at Changi Airport). The ezLink card is used on MRT trains and buses. Touch the ezLink card to the card reader on entry and exit to an MRT station and on boarding and disembarking a bus. The published ezLink-discount fare is automatically deducted from the pre-paid amount. Money can be added (minimum increment is S$10) to the ezLink card at any MRT train station window. On departing Singapore, return the ezLink card to an MRT train station window for a refund of the deposit and any unused portion of the pre-paid amount. The details of the charges are available at Ezlink homepage (check the New Card Policy).

The next thing you need is to know where you want to go. If you forgot to pick up a free copy of the city map at the airport, then the online Street Directory and map is most helpful. Once you know which street to go to, you would want to know the MRT or (combination of) buses to take. The Singapore Infomap at www.sg has comprehensive links to travel and other information.

Taxis are affordable, too. The flag-down rate for taxi (inclusive of 1st km or less) is S$2.40; every 225 metres thereafter or less (up to 10km) is S$0.10; every 200 metres thereafter or less (after 10km) is S$0.10; every 30 secs of waiting or less is S$0.10.
