Biography

Dr Wu Jian Kang currently is principal scientist, department manager, New Initiatives of the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), leading new research initiatives in the area of NeuroInformatics, PhysioInformatics and embedded sensor network systems.

Dr. Wu Jian Kang received Bsc from the University of Science and Technology of China, and PhD from Tokyo University . Prior to join I2R (known as Kent Ridge Digital Labs in 1998-2001, and Institute of Systems Science before 1998) in 1992, he was a full professor in the University of Science and Technology of China, received 9 distinguished awards from the nation ( China ) and the Chinese Academy of Science. He also worked in universities in US, UK , Germany , France and Japan. see Biograph.

Dr. Wu pioneered several researches in the area of visual information processing. This includes adaptive image coding in later 70s, object-oriented GIS in early 80s, face recognition system in 1992, content-based multimedia indexing and retrieval in 90s, and rights management for multimedia contents in later 90s. He initiated and led 3 large intentional collaboration labs. He is an author of 18 patents, 60 journal publications and 5 books. His group was regarded by peers as “ one of the pioneer groups in the world in this field ”.

Dr. Wu founded Trustcopy Pte Ltd, a high tech spin-off from the institute. He served as Chairman and CEO for the first few years, and secured investment of S$7M from 3i, a no. 1 investor in Europe . He was regarded as "an exceptionally bright visionary" by US Giga Information Group.
